Home sales for April came in at an annual rate of 4.97 million, which was up slightly from 4.94 million the previous month. According to the Associated Press, sales activity of previously occupied homes has increased by 9.7 percent in the last year.

While a lack of supply continues be a drag on the overall housing recovery, that appears to also be changing. Boosted by the start of the spring selling season, there were 2.16 million homes on the market in April—a solid 12% jump from the previous month. This certainly seems to be trending in the right direction, but before getting to excited the AP notes available supply is still down 14% from a year ago. At the current sales pace, there is a 5.2-month supply of available homes. In a healthy market that number is typically at least six months.

This supply shortage continues to help drive up prices, which in turn is leading more people to become interested in buying a home, AP reports. The $192,800 median price paid for a previously occupied home last month was up 11% from April 2012. Additionally, the N.A.R reported buyer traffic has spiked by 31% in the last 12 months.

A couple other notable points from the report: sales of high-end real estate is a driving force in the market rebound and the percentage of first-time homebuyers continues to lag below historical norms. In fact, first-time homebuyers accounted for just 29% of all home sales last month—which was down from 35% a year ago and well below the 40% that is considered typical of a healthy market.

Anaheim Ducks’ captain Teemu Selanne is opening a high-end steakhouse on South Coast Highway this summer.

The Anaheim Ducks hockey team has become a part of the fabric of Orange County life during its two decades of existence. To give you an illustration, local news outlets report Teemu Selanne—widely considered as the greatest Ducks player in franchise history—is opening a high-end steakhouse right here in Laguna Beach.

Selanne is part of a three-person ownership group that’s opening the restaurant at the former site of French 75 on South Coast Highway, the Laguna Beach Coastline Pilot reports. Named Selanne’s, appropriately enough, the restaurant will cover two floors and is expected to open on July 1.

Joining Selanne in the ownership group is Kevin Pratt and Jim Shumate, who is the former general manager of Chart House in Dana Beach.

Selanne, nicknamed The Finnish Flash, joined the Ducks in 1995 and today is the oldest player in the NHL at the age of 42. He has been a longtime fan favorite in Orange County thanks to his speed and prolific goal-scoring ability. Selanne was also the driving force in bringing Anaheim its only Stanley Cup championship in 2007.

The restaurant is slated to have a tavern on the ground floor and a main dining room in the second floor. A final determination on a chef is expected in the next couple of weeks, but patrons can expect more than just steaks. Citing its Yelp profile, the Coastline Pilot reports diners can also enjoy burgers and other comfort foods in an upscale neighborhood tavern on the ground floor.

The Selanne’s property was vacant for less than a year, city officials said. Shumate said the site was selected for the restaurant because of the “charm” of the old building.
